The safest place to camp out and wait for the elusive beast is at Pensive Pond, which is close to the transition point to Winding River. Here you'll find a fishing hut to wait out your days in relative comfort.Interior temp is very warm. The big bed makes it even warmer. All animals spawn and wander within 100m of the house making hunting very easy. Crafting table in basement. All furnature/curtains can be put to good use. Nice central location in map.
